# Backup file

A Cake Wallet backup file restores all of your wallets and settings in one step. You'll need the backup file itself and the backup password you saved when [creating the backup](https://docs.cakewallet.com/features/managing-your-wallet/create-backup).

{% hint style="warning" %}
Backups can only be restored on a fresh install with no existing wallets. And ALWAYS save the mnemonic seeds for all of your wallets as well — they are your ultimate backup.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Reinstall the app

On a fresh install, tap `Restore Existing Wallet` on the welcome screen, then choose `Backup file`.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Enter the password and select the file

Enter your backup password, tap `Select backup file`, and choose the backup file from your device. Then tap `Import`.

All of your wallets and settings will be restored.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.cakewallet.com/get-started/setup/restore-existing-wallet/backup-file.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
