Create backup
A Cake Wallet backup copies all of your wallets and settings so they can be restored into a fresh Cake Wallet installation. Backups can only be restored on a new install with no existing wallets. To restore from a backup, see Restore from a backup file.
Save the backup password
The Backup page shows a securely-generated backup password. Tap it to copy it.
SAVE THIS PASSWORD. Store it with the same care as a seed phrase — the backup is useless without it.
Once you have saved it, tap Export backup and confirm with Yes, I have. It can take a few moments to create the backup file, so don't panic if the screen freezes for up to a minute.
Alternatively, you can set your own encryption password with Change password. This is NOT recommended.
Save or share the file
What happens next depends on your platform:
Android — you are asked to pick a destination:
Sharehands the file to the OS share sheet,Save to Downloadswrites it to your Downloads folder.iOS — the share sheet opens directly; there is no
Save to Downloadschoice.Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) — a file-save dialog opens so you can choose where to write the file.
You now have a backup file!
Using external flash storage
It's easy to keep an encrypted backup on flash storage!
You will need a flash drive with a USB-C, micro-USB, or Lightning connector, depending on your device. Modern Android phones and recent iPhones use USB-C; older iPhones use a Lightning connector.
We recommend buying a flash drive from a reputable merchant, such as a large brick-and-mortar retail store or online directly from the manufacturer. 1 GB or more of storage is plenty. This should cost you about $5–20.
After you have the flash drive, plug it into your device.
Follow steps 1 to 3 above. On Android, for step 4 tap Save to Downloads, then copy the file to your flash drive using your device's file manager. On iOS, pick your file manager or the drive itself from the share sheet; on desktop, save straight to the drive in the file-save dialog.
That's it! Make sure you have the password!
Using Proton Drive
Proton Drive allows you to save end-to-end encrypted backups to the cloud. Proton doesn't know the contents of your uploaded files.
First create a Proton account. A free plan includes 1 GB of storage, which is enough for at least 1 backup.
Follow steps 1 to 3 above. On Android, for step 4 tap Share and then Proton Drive (it may be hidden under More); on iOS the share sheet opens on its own, so just pick Proton Drive there.
After you tap Proton Drive, optionally go to the location in your encrypted cloud drive where you would like to upload the backup file. Tap Upload.
Share, More and Upload are labels from your operating system's share sheet and the Proton Drive app, not from Cake Wallet, so they may differ on your device.
That's it! Make sure you have the password!
